PRC's story is one of hope and renewal! In May 2006 Zan and Mashunda began the endorsement process with the Guilford Center, but the seeds of growth for PRC began decades before when Zan was a seminary student, then chaplain and completed a residency in a hospital setting. She worked with mothers and families who had children with disabilities. During this same period of time, Zan herself had two birth children who were diagnosed with a rare genetic deletion disorder called Angelman Syndrome. Following her doctoral work in pastoral counseling Zan started a private practice which quickly became a place of refuge for parents who were struggling with their own issues of loss and grief when their children were diagnosed with potentially disabling conditions. During this same time, Mashunda was completing her bachelor's degree in psychology at WSSU and beginning to work with families in positions of economic disadvantage. Zan began a second master's program in rehabilitation counseling at Winston Salem State University in Jan 2004. Mashunda and Zan met in the fall of 2004 when Mashunda enrolled in the same program.

After graduation, Zan taught for one year in the Master of  Science in Rehabilitation Counseling program, where she became Mashunda's clinical supervisor and mentor. Their friendship grew and in May 2005, they decided to create an agency which would serve persons with disabilities. They looked at the state of the mental health care system in North Carolina and saw a discernable gap in service providers in the area of persons with intellectual disabilities and mental health comorbid conditions. They decided to focus on areas of service where other agencies were not providing the level of successful services needed to stabilize these difficult family system needs.

Provisionally endorsed Dec 16, 2006 and fully endorsed in November 2007 for CAP I/DD services and Medicaid Enhanced Benefits for Community Supports for Children, PRC began serving the community in Jan 2007. Since that time, PRC has become nationally accredited with CQL, and are also proud of our ongoing affiliation with the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship.

Both Zan and Mashunda are nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselors and bring the formal and informal educational experiences together for a rich and diverse approach to disability services.

Together, the family of PRC welcome your interest in our history/herstory and invite you to walk along with us on your journey.
